Shinji :

Shinji is the impersonation of Yesod, he shares its illusion of security, which he finds in his own heart, as it was pointed out by Kaworu (he said that Shinji was afraid of interaction with people because he was afraid to get hurt. Therefore, he retracts into the security of his own heart.)
Shinji would rather do nothing than to do something wrong, thus showing an annoying idleness, the vice of Yesod. He hardly ever showed any sign of self-initiative.
Kaworu told him, that he was afraid to trust for fear of betrayal. So the obligation for Shinji, what he must do to break out from his sole prison, would be to trust people, and so reach independence - the virtue of Yesod.
This, unfortunately, he didn't reach.
